Documents you must have with you

Driving licence and vehicle registration certificate
ID card or passport (since 26.6.12 it has also been obligatory for children under 16 travelling within the EU to have their own identity document.)
International Motor Insurance Card (Green Card) is recommended.

Please note: If you drive a vehicle of which you are not the owner, you require written authorisation from the registered vehicle keeper.

First-aid kit / Hi-vis vest

Obligation to carry a high-visibility vest: A high-visibility vest (compliant with EN 471) is now compulsory on-board equipment. It must always be carried when travelling outside built-up areas. The vest must be worn as soon as you leave your motorbike in the event of a breakdown or accident and are on the carriageway or hard shoulder.
Exception: Professional motorcyclists must wear the high-visibility vest at all times whilst riding.

Obligations and Prohibitions

Compulsory helmet use: Helmets are compulsory! Only helmets that comply with ECE standard 22 are permitted. Stricter helmet checks: Helmets must be officially approved (e.g. to ECE 22.06 or its predecessor 22.05). Mere ‘certificates’ or inadequate older helmets are no longer sufficient. Medical exemptions from the compulsory helmet rule have been completely abolished.

Certified gloves compulsory (outside built-up areas): Riders and pillion passengers must wear certified motorcycling gloves (in accordance with European standard EN 13594) on all roads outside built-up areas. Ordinary leisure or work gloves are prohibited.

Ban on open footwear (everywhere): Riding in flip-flops, sandals or barefoot is completely prohibited. Closed footwear that covers the entire foot is mandatory – on all roads (including within built-up areas in towns and cities).
